In a week where Middle East tensions dominate global headlines, Russia is quietly watching a crisis that could shake its strategic foundations — the potential collapse of the Iranian regime.
At a high-level conference in Moscow themed “Russian-Iranian Cooperation in a Changing World,” top officials found themselves confronting a harsh new reality: Iran — one of Russia’s closest allies — is facing unprecedented pressure as the war with Israel escalates.
With U.S. support behind Israel and former President Donald Trump demanding Tehran’s “unconditional surrender,” Iran’s grip on power looks increasingly shaky. For Moscow, this could be a devastating geopolitical blow.
While Russia has forged deep military and economic ties with Iran — including a recent strategic partnership treaty — it is clear the Kremlin has no intention of stepping into the battlefield on Iran’s behalf. Analysts say Russia is unwilling to risk direct conflict with the U.S. or jeopardize its interests in Ukraine.
“If Iran falls, Russia loses more than a friend — it loses billions in investments and influence in a critical region,” said one analyst in Berlin.Russia has benefited from Iran’s support in Ukraine, especially with drone technology. But that dependency has faded. Moscow now produces its own weapons and is turning to other Gulf powers for partnerships.
Interestingly, some in Russia are trying to spin the chaos as an opportunity. Oil prices are climbing — a short-term economic win for a country under heavy sanctions. Plus, Trump’s focus has shifted to the Middle East, giving Russia breathing room in Ukraine.
Still, the long-term risks outweigh the gains. A new Middle East led by U.S.-aligned governments would isolate Russia even further.

Experts say this crisis exposes the shallow foundations of the Russia-Iran alliance — built not on culture or history, but on a shared resistance to the West.
As missiles fly and regimes shake, one question echoes from Moscow to Tehran: Can this alliance survive the storm?
