El-Rufai Distances Himself from Tinubu's Govt, Calls It a National Tragedy

June 23, 2025 – Abuja: Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has for the first time publicly expressed gratitude for not being part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, declaring that each day he watches the government's handling of national affairs reinforces his relief.

Speaking in an exclusive interview aired Monday morning, El-Rufai said that witnessing what he described as “serial blunders” by the current administration only makes him more convinced that divine intervention kept him out of it. “Every time I see the government make a mess of things, especially in areas that should be straightforward for any serious administration, I whisper thanks to God,” he said with visible conviction.

The former minister and two-term governor did not mince words, referring to the current leadership as a “tragedy” and distancing himself from the legacy he once helped to build. “I was part of the forces that brought this leadership to power, and that haunts me. But I'm thankful I’m not involved in the rot we're seeing now,” he stated.

Mr. El-Rufai’s comments come just days after President Tinubu openly criticized the Kaduna legacy he left behind, praising his successor Uba Sani for “rescuing” the state from what he termed a “toxic inheritance.” The exchange marks a sharp escalation in the simmering tensions between both political figures, once perceived as allies in Nigeria’s ruling party.

Political observers believe El-Rufai's recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is more than just ideological—it signals a potential coalition of disenchanted political heavyweights seeking to challenge Tinubu’s re-election prospects in 2027. El-Rufai has already hinted that he is open to working with other opposition voices to remove what he calls “a failed presidency.”

The fallout began after the Senate blocked El-Rufai’s ministerial nomination—a move he attributes to Tinubu’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering. In past public remarks, El-Rufai has gone as far as referencing the president’s alleged past scandals and questioned his competence to lead a nation in crisis.

Once a vocal supporter of the Tinubu campaign, El-Rufai’s U-turn has sent shockwaves across political circles. His transformation from insider to critic underscores the deepening rift in Nigeria’s political establishment and hints at bigger realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While the presidency is yet to issue a direct response to the latest remarks, sources close to the Villa indicate that the Tinubu camp views El-Rufai's criticisms as “bitter outbursts” fueled by disappointment. But to many Nigerians grappling with inflation, fuel crises, and security concerns, El-Rufai’s words echo a growing frustration with leadership that feels increasingly out of touch.

“We warned, but nobody listened,” one Kaduna resident remarked after watching the interview. “Now even those who brought him in are washing their hands clean. What does that say about where we’re headed?”
