In a significant move for historical justice and cultural restoration, the Netherlands has returned 119 sacred Benin artefacts to Nigeria — over 120 years after they were taken during colonial invasion.
The artefacts, which include intricately crafted bronzes and ivory sculptures, were looted by British forces in 1897 during a violent raid on the ancient Kingdom of Benin. Now, after global calls for repatriation and pressure from international cultural bodies, these treasures are finally home.
At a solemn handover ceremony held at the National Museum in Lagos, Olugbile Holloway, the Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, described the artefacts as “embodiments of identity and memory,” belonging to the very soul of the Benin people.
While four artefacts will remain at the museum as part of Nigeria's national collection, the rest will be sent to the Oba of Benin’s palace, where they originated from. The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, is expected to oversee their reintegration into the kingdom’s cultural heritage.
This handover follows similar returns from countries like Germany, the UK, and the US. In 2022 alone, Nigeria received more than 100 cultural items from various institutions across the globe. The global movement for restitution of African art is gaining traction — and this latest return is seen as a moral victory for the continent.
The Benin Bronzes, dating back to the 16th century, stand as testimony to the creative sophistication of African civilizations long before colonial contact. Their return is a step toward healing old wounds, and a reminder that cultural legacy is not a commodity, but a sacred trust.
This is more than a return of objects — it is the return of dignity.
