Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have jointly condemned Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, urging all sides to pursue diplomatic solutions instead of further escalation.
In a phone call on Thursday, the two leaders expressed strong opposition to Israel’s actions, with the Kremlin saying the strikes violate the United Nations Charter and international law. Both leaders agreed that “there is no military solution” to the crisis surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and emphasized that diplomacy is the only path forward.
Putin reiterated Russia’s offer to mediate the conflict. According to his aide Yuri Ushakov, Xi supported the proposal, saying it could help ease the mounting tensions between Israel and Iran. Chinese state media reported that Xi called on “major powers,” particularly the United States, to push for peace and prevent the conflict from spiraling into a broader war.
The timing of their conversation comes as Washington signals it hasn’t ruled out joining Israel’s efforts, raising global fears of a wider confrontation.
The two presidents also discussed recent divisions among Western leaders at the G7 summit in Canada. Putin reportedly pointed out the lack of unity among G7 members, especially after the group failed to issue a joint statement on Ukraine. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, who departed the summit early, returned to Washington with fresh threats against Iran — remarks that have unsettled both allies and adversaries.
Russia and Iran, longtime partners with anti-U.S. leanings, signed a strategic cooperation agreement earlier this year. While Russia hasn’t supplied Iran with weapons, it has continued to support its civilian nuclear program. Putin confirmed that over 200 Russian personnel are still working at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant and that an agreement has been made with Israel to ensure their safety.
Xi, in his first public comments on the crisis, said at a Kazakhstan summit that he is “deeply worried” about the situation and urged all parties to end hostilities quickly. The leaders have agreed to stay in close contact as the situation develops, and they are expected to meet again at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China this August.
