SERAP Urges Tinubu to Refer Benue Killings to ICC for Justice
The fight for justice in Benue State has reached a critical crossroad. Civil society group SERAP has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently refer the recent wave of mass killings in Benue to the International Criminal Court. They argue that only international intervention can break the cycle of impunity.
In a scathing statement, SERAP’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, reminded the government of its obligation under the Rome Statute. He emphasized that domestic courts have repeatedly failed to hold perpetrators — whether state-linked or otherwise — to account.
"These brutal mass killings demand accountability. Whether carried out by state or non-state actors, justice cannot wait."
SERAP further urged that other regions—like Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, Taraba, and Borno—be included in any ICC investigation, citing ongoing bloodshed and human rights breaches.
Unlike criminal prosecutions that stall in local courts, an ICC referral under Article 14 would trigger an immediate examination — no need for additional permissions. Oluwadare noted, “It’s procedurally simple and the ICC can begin work right away.”
Supporters of SERAP argue that this bold step would reinforce Tinubu’s promise to tackle insecurity and restore hope to victims whose lives have been shattered. But above all, it would mark a firm break from tolerated impunity.
📍 Why it matters: According to recent AP reporting, at least 150 people were killed in the area, and the president's delayed response drew sharp criticism as security agencies pursued those responsible 0.
💡 Final thought: When domestic justice walls crumble, international law must hold. The world is watching — Benue’s call for justice could test Nigeria's commitment to human rights like never before.
